A GFCI is a
ground fault
circuit interrupter which is an inexpensive electrical
device that
constantly monitors electricity flowing in a circuit to
sense any loss
of current. If a loss is detected, the GFCI quickly
switches off power to
that circuit. GFCIs
can prevent over 2/3 of the approximately 300
electrocutions still
occurring each year in and around the home.
Installation of the
device can also prevent thousands of burns and
electric shock
injuries each year.
In
order to comply with
National Electric Code, GFCI protection is
required for most outdoor
receptacles, bathroom and kitchen
receptacles, garage wall outlets and
all receptacles in crawl spaces
and unfinished basements. For
homes
protected by fuses, installation of GFCIs are limited to
receptacle or
portable-type GFCIs which can be placed in areas of
greatest exposure
such as the bathroom, kitchen, basement and garage. |
